Security at all Levels

Lift Intercom
Lift Alarm

You are managing a company campus, industrial site or other large building complex with a large number of lifts? Then you know what a challenge it is to keep track of everything and maintain technical systems in compliance with the latest standards. And what it means to ensure the smooth functioning of all lifts under your responsibility, and to be able to react as quickly as possible at lift alarms.

Making your Lifts Safe and Sound

Operators of lift systems must ensure that trapped persons are freed as quickly as possible and that communication to and from the lift cars is guaranteed at all times. It is the only way to comply with the strict European standards of EN 81-28:2018.

Compliance is the key

In the whole European Union as well as in other countries that adopt most EU directives (like Switzerland or Norway), a Lift Intercom System in compliance with EN81-28:2018 is mandatory for all passenger lifts. This standard stipulates that a in case the lift car is stuck between floors with the doors closed, trapped passengers must have a hands-free intercom device allowing them to call the rescue organisation that will free them. Commend offers all compontents to meet this strict standard, and yet perfectly taylor it to the needs of your organisation.

Secure connection to rescue organisations at all times

In case persons are trapped in the lift cabin, they need secure communication. Once the lift alarm call to the rescue organisation is established, only authorized personnel will be able to cancel the communication. Trapped persons will be in communication with the rescue organisation at all times and stay informed on the process of the rescue operation. Illuminated symbols in accordance with EN81-28:2018 will give additional help.

Which Technology to use?

There are two technologies Commend recommends for Lift Intercom Solutions – both assuring highest availability and operational security. Both technologies are designed to create a solution fully complying with EN81-28:2018. You have the flexibility to choose the technology you prefer.

Commend Lift Intercom solutions for elevator communication meet all requirements. Let us show you how to modernize your elevator communication to the state of the art and thus fulfill all legal requirements reliably.

Digital 2-Wire

Digital 2-wire is an established technology using an independent cabling that will allow up to 3.000m of length between the intercom server and the emergency call point in the lift cabin. The advantages are clear: even in tall buildings there is no issue running the Intercom cabling with the trailing cables of the lift. Thanks to the independent cabling highest operational security is given.

Symphony BF

Symphony BF is the perfect SIP-based IP platform for all security communications. Using an existing IT-infrastructure, this is the technology to create a cost-effective Lift Intercom Solution. Based on standard protocols it includes Commend’s Cyber Security features, including encryption for safe communication. Using the IP-Bridge, parts of the transmission can run via 2-wire cables, allowing the use of trailings cables for IT-connections as well.

More Opportunities

When you manage a large building or even a corporate campus, then you may want to integrate Lift Intercom in your holistic security concept. Commend Lift Intercom can become a part of the ASBIS (Advanced Security Building Intercom System) according to ISO EN 62820-2 and EN 62820-3-2. When an Emergeny Operation Plan (EOP) is activated, the Lift Intercom System will become part of the Emergency & Danger Response System (EDRS). Persons in the lift will be informed on the current emergency situation, and can be given directives what to do.

Lift Intercom Applications

Lift Intercom in the Lift Car

In the lift cars, an effective two-way communication system is installed in accordance with EN 81-28:2018, allowing an emergency service to be always reached.

  • Remote triggered emergency call button for emergency call simulation
  • Continuous line monitoring and cyclic loudspeaker and microphone tests
  • Indication and logging at the control station
  • Lift Intercom with Intercom stations for car roof, lift pit and machine room
  • Public address functions, e.g. for announcements or background music.

The EN81-28:2018 as the defining standard only considers the risk of being trapped in the event of a lift malfunction and explicitly does not include other risks. However, passenger aggression or medical problems can also occur.

Call Answering

In the event of a lift malfunction, the call goes directly to a rescue organization. However, if the lift is working properly, the call can be directed to an on-site security officer or even to a local Security Operations Center (SOC).

The Commend Lift Intercom is the perfect solution to meet the requirements of EN81-28:2018. At the same time, it can be part of the general safety and communication concept. Advanced features such as the scream alarm give more security and comfort to people using a building.

Emergency call solutions for lifts

Ensuring lift safety is one of the main requirements for any building, whether public or private. Lift alarm systems are essential devices for responding promptly to emergency situations, demonstrating their full effectiveness when the situation becomes critical. Precisely because maximum reliability is required in these situations, Commend designs and manufactures advanced communication solutions that ensure reliable performance, audio quality and compliance with the most stringent regulations, including EN 81-28 and EN 81-70.

Remote alarms and help points: safety and ease of use

The lift intercom systems developed by Commend integrate advanced alarm remote control functions that allow operators to have centralised supervision. This is possible thanks to the IP or PSTN connectivity provided by the devices and control systems.

This makes it possible to monitor the status of terminals in real time and receive automatic notifications in the event of a fault, in addition to the standard voice or video communication modes. Lift help points are designed to be intuitive to use and easily recognisable, with illuminated buttons, audible and visual feedback, and crystal-clear audio quality.

Furthermore, the adoption of OpenDuplex® technology and active ambient noise cancellation ensure that communication with the control centre is maintained even in difficult conditions, such as in the event of panic among those present or high levels of background noise.

The regulatory framework for
emergency communication for lifts

EN 81-70: Safe and independent access and use of lifts

In addition to emergency communication, it is essential that lift communication systems meet the requirements for safe and independent access and use defined by EN 81-70.

Commend terminals are equipped with accessible solutions that, in accordance with the standard, allow people with visual or hearing impairments to receive confirmation of the call status and request assistance with ease. The interfaces are compatible with magnetic induction loop devices for hearing aids, and integrated pictograms provide clear visual signals when communication is activated and the door is opened.

Why compliance with EN 81-28 is important

The EN 81-28 standard sets out the requirements for lift remote alarms and emergency communication systems between passengers trapped in the lift car and an external rescue centre. Commend solutions are designed to fully comply with these standards by design and guarantee continuous, reliable two-way voice communication, even in the event of a power failure. The system performs periodic automatic checks on the correct functioning of the device, ensuring that the lift emergency terminal is fully operational at all times.

Intercoms for lifts: clear and immediate communication

Commend lift intercoms are made from resistant and durable materials, suitable for installation in harsh environments subject to vibrations, humidity or vandalism. They are available in flush-mounted or wall-mounted versions, with raised buttons and symbols that comply with accessibility regulations. Emergency calls are managed by certified Intercom Servers, which allow event logging, call origin identification and integration with other building managementsystems, such as video surveillance and access control.

Remote alarm management: centralised and efficient management

Remote lift alarm systems allow all emergency calls to be collected in a single operations centre, simplifying management, even for multiple buildings simultaneously, and reducing monitoring costs. Commend solutions enable data transmission via IP, remote verification of device operation, network status monitoring and automatic notifications in the event of a fault or scheduled maintenance.

Thanks to the modular and scalable infrastructure, the lift remote alarm network can be integrated with other security systems, including third-party systems, such as voice evacuation systems, fire protection devices and audio/video distribution systems, ensuring a high level of automation and interoperability.

Certified reliability, readiness in emergencies

Commend lift alarm systems are developed according to the principle of Security by Design and tested to ensure reliability, durability and ease of installation. Centralised power supply with backup, continuous monitoring of microphone and loudspeaker, and periodic self-test functions help prevent service interruptions. The availability of intercom servers, both software and hardware, allows for the configuration of tailor-made solutions for every type of building: from single apartment buildings to large hospital, commercial, school or residential complexes.
