Emergency Preparedness Starts Before the Alarm

When an emergency occurs in a school or university, technology alone is not enough. The real challenge is ensuring the right people receive the right information at the right time. This is the focus of the new European Standard EN 50726-1, which defines how organisations should prepare for emergencies through risk assessment, alarm verification, coordinated response and continuous improvement.

Rather than introducing another alarm system, EN 50726-1 promotes a structured Emergency and Danger Response System (EDRS). Complementary standards EN IEC 62820-2 and EN IEC 62820-3-2 define how Advanced Security Building Intercom Systems (ASBIS) provide the communication infrastructure needed to verify alarms, coordinate communication, guide operators and document incidents.

For educational institutions, this approach delivers value beyond emergency situations. Modern communication platforms support everyday tasks such as visitor communication, entrance control and routine operations while becoming part of an Emergency and Danger Response System whenever an incident occurs. This enables schools and universities to improve preparedness while making the most of their investment.
